These pieces were commissioned to stand adjacent to the entrance to Queen Mary’s woodland in Sutton, Surrey. The ash logs came from a tree felled as part of the woodland’s forestry management programme and due to the size and weight were carved within the woods close to where it was cut down. The great spotted woodpecker was chosen as it is native to the area and was made more recognisable by having the dark areas depicted with a blowlamp.
